Welsh football manager Gary Speed 'commits suicide' at 42

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has told the BBC it appears Speed, the national manager for nearly a year, killed himself.

Cheshire Police confirmed he was found dead at 07:08 GMT at his home in Huntington, Chester. They said there were no suspicious circumstances.

First Minister Carwyn Jones called it "devastating news" and said he was deeply saddened.The football world has been left in shock by the death of Gary Speed, the Welsh international manager.Wales manager Gary Speed has been found hanged at his home in Cheshire, it was revealed today.

The former Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton star, who appeared on BBC's Football Focus show yesterday, was aged 42.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. It is believed to be suicide. He leaves his wife Louise and two sons.The 42- year-old, one of the most respected young managers in the game, was found hanged at his North Wales home this morning.

Speed enjoyed a glittering career as a player at Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton before moving into coaching with his national team.

He has been leading a renaissance of the Welsh national side in recent weeks, but his life has been tragically cut short by what police are treating as suicide.
