Santa Cruz's Luke Rockhold Fights for the MMA Middleweight Championship Belt

He has been training in martial arts from the age of 6 and now the 185-pound MMA fighter is up for the Middleweight Championship Belt in a nationally-televised fight.Luke was training in Judo at the age of 6. By the time he was in seventh grade he was on the school wrestling team and all through high school Luke remained on the wrestling team and trained in Jiu Jitsu.

Jiu Jitsu became his passion as continued to train under Dave Camarillo and he won a handful of Jiu Jitsu events. As Luke progressed he began to train at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) it was at this MMA training facility where Rockhold would establish himself.

Luke Rockhold became the new Strikeforce middleweight champ with a tight decision win over Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at Strikeforce on Saturday night. In a bout that saw Rockhold outstrike Souza 145-63, the judges saw the fight 50-45, 48-47 for Rockhold.


Souza took Rockhold down early in the first round, but then had trouble maneuvering him. Rockhold worked to his knees, where was able to land punches, then get to his feet. Jacare took him right back down, but they worked back up again, and Rockhold was able to break free. Jacare took advantage, and stalked Rockhold down with kicks. Rockhold responded with a dazzling array of strikes, including three straight punches as Souza held Rockhold's leg.
